I make saltglazed domestic pots - with a particular interest in teapots and other such pouring vessels. My original training as an aeronautical engineer is a strong influence on my practice, both in the way I construct and fire my work and in the sense of physical and visual balance I aim to achieve in its design.
The bodies and lids of my pots are thrown and turned, and the spouts and handles are slipcast. I then assemble the pots from these components. After biscuit firing I spray on slips, glazes, and stains in varying thicknesses and intensities before saltglazing them to 1280°C. During this final high temperature firing handles are supported by a scaffolding arrangement of clay pillars and kilnshelf joists to prevent collapsing..
